Calling the findings of the preliminary investigation into the killing of Khalistan separatist Hardeep Singh Nijjar an “internal matter” of Canada, India on Saturday requested “specific and relevant evidence” regarding any alleged involvement of the Indian government.
Canadian authorities have arrested three Indian nationals in connection with Nijjar’s murder.
Indian High Commissioner to Canada Sanjay Kumar Verma said in a statement that India expects to receive regular updates from the concerned Canadian authorities regarding the Indian nationals arrested in the case.
“Canadian authorities have informed us about the arrest of three Indian nationals resident in Canada in connection with the shooting death of a Canadian national, Hardeep Singh Nijjar. “We look forward to receiving regular updates from the relevant Canadian authorities regarding the arrested Indian nationals.”
Nijjar, who was designated a terrorist by India’s National Investigation Agency (NIA) in 2020, was killed outside a gurudwara in Surrey, British Columbia in June last year.
Saying that the arrests made in the case are “the result of the investigation conducted by the relevant Canadian law enforcement agencies”, Verma said, “This issue is internal to Canada and therefore we have no comment to give in this regard. “
“As stated repeatedly, it is not the policy of the Government of India to interfere in the internal affairs of other countries. “We are always ready to work with partner countries in solving crimes, provided specific and relevant evidence is shared with us.”
External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar also said that whatever is happening in Canada regarding Nijjar’s murder is mostly due to their internal politics and has nothing to do with India.
Jaishankar said this while answering the question of why Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau is criticizing India.
“Now the image of India globally is much better than before… Canada is an exception. You have seen heads of various countries praising India and its Prime Minister,” the external affairs minister told the media in Bhubaneswar.
He said that a section of pro-Khalistan people are using Canada’s democracy, creating a lobby and becoming a vote bank.
Following the arrest of three Indian nationals, Canadian authorities have said that their investigation is not over yet, and “others” who may have played a role in the murder will also be arrested.
Karan Brar, 22, Kamalpreet Singh, 22, and Karanpreet Singh, 28, all Indian nationals living in Edmonton, have been charged with first-degree murder and conspiracy to commit murder.
The Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) on Friday said they are investigating whether the Indian government was involved in the killing of Canadian citizen Nijjar. All three are believed to be members of the alleged hit squad appointed by the Indian government to kill 45-year-old Nijjar outside a gurudwara in Surrey, British Columbia on June 18, 2023.
“The investigation does not end here. The officer in charge of the Integrated Homicide Investigation Team (IHIT) said, “We know that other people have played a role in this murder and we are dedicated to identifying and arresting each of them.” ,
Relations between India and Canada came under severe strain following Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s allegations in September last year of “possible” involvement of Indian agents in Nijjar’s murder.
India has rejected Trudeau’s allegations as “absurd” and “motivated”.
