Rex Heuermann Wikipedia Wife, News, Family, House, Height, Documentary, Age, Net Worth: The suspect arrested for the long-unsolved murders of women on Long Island, New York, was taken into custody Thursday evening. Here’s what we know so far: The person charged on Friday lived in a quiet suburb on the South Shore, near the beach highway where the bodies were first discovered over ten years ago.
Who is Rex Heuermann?
Authorities blocked off Heuermann’s home in Massapequa Park on Friday. Officials in hazmat suits were seen entering the modest one-story house, which is on a street with larger, well-kept homes. Investigators were searching both his house and his office in midtown Manhattan.
Some neighbors said they had brief interactions with Heuermann and his family over the years, but the family generally kept to themselves.
Heuermann was noticeable as a “tall, big guy who was always well dressed,” said Patricia Maressa, 64, who has lived next door for over 20 years.
“I’m still shocked this is happening,” she said. “It’s a very quiet neighborhood. At night, you could hear a pin drop.”
Heuermann’s home is also connected to his business, RH Consultants & Associates. He got his architecture license in 1996, and New York state records show no enforcement actions against him.
The suspect, named in court as Rex Heuermann, 59, is from Massapequa Park in Nassau County. His arrest surprised his quiet neighborhood. Neighbors described him as a well-dressed man who worked as an architect in Manhattan. They had no idea he might be involved in the murders that have puzzled investigators and gained national attention.
“If he’s found guilty, he was living a double life,” said Rosemarie Kafka, 56, a former neighbor who lived near the Heuermann family before moving last year. “He seemed like a regular guy who goes to work, has kids in the local school, and lives in a good neighborhood, but he’s also killing people secretly.”
Heuermann was arrested in midtown Manhattan on Thursday night and taken to Suffolk County. He was charged with three counts of first-degree murder and three counts of second-degree murder for killing three women. He is also suspected in the disappearance and death of a fourth woman, but that is still being investigated. A judge ordered that he be held without bail.
At a news conference on Friday afternoon, local prosecutors and police praised a task force formed early last year for identifying Heuermann as the main suspect. They used cellphone evidence and DNA from a pizza crust to build their case against him.
“Fresh eyes on this case and our investigators’ persistence helped us identify Rex Heuermann,” said Suffolk County Police Commissioner Rodney Harrison. “Rex Heuermann is a monster among us.”
However, Heuermann’s lawyer, Michael J. Brown, told reporters that the evidence against his client is “very circumstantial,” and said Heuermann denies any involvement.
“He was in tears and said, ‘I didn’t do this,'” Brown said. “He’s very upset about the charges.”
The case puzzled investigators for years after human remains were found near Gilgo Beach in 2010, leading to the discovery of up to 16 victims, many of whom were known sex workers. Police don’t think all the deaths are connected to the same person, but they believe Heuermann is involved in four of the murders. According to court documents, these four women were found in similar positions and bound with belts or tape. Three of them were also wrapped in burlap-like material.
