She is an Egyptian-born British and American economist who has been serving as the 20th President of Columbia University since July 2023. Education
She received a bachelor of arts with a major in economics and politics from the University of Massachusetts Amherst in the year 1983 a master of Science in economics from the London School of economic in 1986 and a doctor of philosophy in economics from the St. Antony’s College, Oxford in the year 1989.
Career
She joined the World Bank after Oxford and held a variety of roles there has also started in the research department where she worked on Global economic modeling and forecasting and then on environmental issues. She then murders to macroeconomic work in Eastern Europe during the transition and in the Middle East where she published a variety of books and articles on the region’s economic future and the economic of peace labor markets regional integration as well as gender issues. At the age of 36, she became the World Bank’s youngest-ever vice president.
She has also held academic appointments both as an agent professor in The economic department at Georgetown University from the year 1989 to 1994 and as a visiting associate professor at the Wharton Business School of the University of Pennsylvania in the spring in the year 1996. She initially went to the British government’s Department for International Development the second as a director general for the country programs where she was responsible for all of the DFID’s overseas offices and the financing Africa middle Asia Latin America and Eastern Europe.
She has been appointed as the DFID’s Permanent secretary which was in the year 2008 and where she has managed a bilateral aid program which is in over 100 countries, multilateral policies, and financing for the United States European Union as well as international financial institute.
She had served as an IMF deputy Managing Director from April 2011 until March 2014. As a deputy Managing Director, she has also overseen the IMF’s work in Europe and the Middle East with a dollar one billion administrative budget for human resources for its 3000 staff and with the IMF’s training and technical assistance which is for the policymakers around the world.
She had joined the Bank of England as its first deputy governor on markets and banking responsible for the Bank’s 500 Euro billion balance sheet and had served as a member of the bank’s monetary policy committee, board of the prudential regulatory authority, and financial policy committee. She had led the bank’s fair and effective markets review to tackle the misconduct in the financial markets.
