She worked as a staff assistant for Congressman Scott Mclnnis in Washington, DC before serving as the press secretary for Rep. Dan Schaefer.

In November 2001, she was a spokesperson in the Department of Justice where she served for 2 years. She had joined the White House as the associate director of communication and had also worked with the White House Council on environmental quality. From the year 2005 to 2017 she also worked as a deputy press secretary. From March 27 to April 30 2007 she served as the replacement for Tony Snow and also became the acting White House press secretary in his absence while she underwent treatment for colon cancer. In September 2007, she was promoted and became the assistant to the president as well as the White House press secretary she served in this position until the end of the Bush administration in January 2009.
