Jennifer Love Hewitt has no hesitation about revisiting her past roles!

In an interview with ET for a retrospective of her extensive career, the 9-1-1 star reflects on her role as Margaret in Sister Act 2: Back in the Habit. She also shares her thoughts on the upcoming sequel, Sister Act 3, by Tyler Perry and Whoopi Goldberg.

Hewitt played high school student Margaret in Sister Act 2, where Las Vegas performer Deloris Van Cartier (played by Goldberg) is asked by her nun friends—Sister Mary Patrick (Kathy Najimy) and Sister Mary Lazarus (Mary Wickes)—to return as her undercover alter ego, Sister Mary Clarence. They need her help teaching music to teens at a troubled school to prevent it from being shut down by a strict administrator, Mr. Crisp (James Coburn).

“Whoopi Goldberg made my life on this film,” Hewitt tells ET, recalling her time working with the 68-year-old EGOT winner. “She was so kind and amazing; she taught me so much during this movie.”

Jennifer Love Hewitt, along with Alanna Ubach, Ryan Toby, Ron Johnson, Devin Kamin, Christian Fitzharris, and Mehran Marcos Sedghi, played the students in Deloris’ lively music class in Sister Act 2. The story follows these students as they win the All-State Choir Championship, convincing the local diocese to keep their school open.

Working on the set of this musical film came with many perks. The cast included several musical stars, like Lauryn Hill in her breakout role as high school student Rita. Sheryl Lee Ralph played Rita’s mother, Florence Watson. The film also featured gospel singer Erica Campbell from Mary Mary, R&B singer Ryan Toby from City High, and Tanya Trotter from The War and Treaty as choir members.

“I got to hear Lauryn Hill sing live every day. Who gets that opportunity? It was so fun,” Hewitt recalls. “I loved getting to sing and dance. I hadn’t done much of that since Kids Incorporated, so it felt like I was back in my comfort zone a little bit.”

Jennifer Love Hewitt still has fond memories of the Sister Act 2 cast, even after 30 years. “It was just such a fun movie,” she says.

Reflecting on her experience, Hewitt admits that at 14 years old, she didn’t fully grasp the significance of the moment. “There were times when I thought, ‘Oh my gosh, this is really happening.’ I felt super excited and terrified at the same time, but everyone was so kind, lovely, and supportive,” she shares.

Hewitt describes her character as “really funny” and “a little over the top,” and she enjoyed watching her talented peers on set. “Seeing that talent every day made me feel like I’d won a contest to be there. It was amazing,” she says.

Whoopi Goldberg, who played Deloris in the original 1992 Sister Act and its 1993 sequel, has been trying to get Sister Act 3 into production for years. She has been vocal about wanting to reunite the original cast for the sequel.

Goldberg and Tyler Perry have been working together on the project since they appeared on Watch What Happens Live! together in 2018 and pitched the idea. Disney announced in 2020 that the project would become a reality on Disney+, but there have been few updates since then.
