Ennis’s decision to prioritize her team’s safety over her ambition on Everest was in line with her values. “Tough call being so close to the top,” she said, “but it wasn’t worth anyone’s injury or death. The mountain’s not going anywhere. I can come back.”
The pandemic delayed her return, but now she’s ready to make another attempt at Everest, known as Sagarmatha, “Goddess of the Sky,” in Nepal. If successful, Ennis will become the first American amputee to conquer all Seven Summits and the second overall, following Indian climber Arunima Sinha, who completed the feat in 2019. Her journey, marked by pain, planning, and persistence, is nearing its climax, promising a triumphant conclusion.
