The same year, 23-year-old Jamie Osuna was arrested in connection with Pena’s murder.
Despite initially claiming innocence, Osuna admitted to being the last person to see her alive.
He pleaded not guilty and expressed a hope that Pena’s family would find the real murderer.
Osuna was denied bail and spent nearly six years in county jail.
In 2017, Osuna accepted a plea deal to avoid the death penalty and was sentenced to life imprisonment without the possibility of parole.
She also holds an American nationality and strongly believes in the Christian religion.
