Afghanistan’s acting ambassador to India Zakia Wardak resigned last month after she was caught smuggling 25 kg of gold worth Rs 18.6 crore from Dubai to Mumbai airport.
A senior Afghan diplomat in India has resigned from his post after reports of his involvement in gold smuggling from Dubai emerged. Zakia Wardak was caught at Mumbai airport last month for trying to smuggle 25 kg of gold worth Rs 18.6 crore from the UAE capital.
She had been Afghanistan’s acting ambassador to New Delhi since late last year after serving as the Afghan Consul General in Mumbai for more than two years.
Taking to X, Wardak mentioned “numerous personal attacks and defamation” directed towards her as well as her family that impacted her ability to operate in the position of an Afghan diplomat. However, she didn’t mention the reports of the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) seizing from her on April 25.
Wardak was not arrested for her diplomatic immunity, news agency PTI reported.
Her statement read, “These attacks, which appear to be organized, have seriously impaired my ability to conduct my role effectively and demonstrate the challenges women face in Afghan society, which attempts to bring about modernization and positive change amid ongoing propaganda campaigns.”
Wardak said the “persistent and coordinated” attacks exceeded “tolerable limits”. She further said that although she was prepared to deal with the attacks on her character, which were “not entirely surprising”, she was “not prepared for the impact it would have on people close to me”.
“It is not fair to subject them to such inappropriate and horrifically inappropriate experiences,” their statement said.
Zakia Wardak said that serving her country and bringing about positive change is her passion, but that in the wake of the attacks, she must prioritize her “own well-being and ability to function in my normal capacity.”
He thanked the Government and citizens of India for their “warm welcome” and “unwavering support” during his three-year tenure and described the experience as “a privilege”.
“I sincerely hope for a future where women in leadership roles will be supported and respected, where opportunities for advancement will be embraced rather than met with hostility and stigma,” she wrote in the statement. My commitment to advocating for positive change remains unwavering.”,
Zakia Wardak took charge of the Afghan Embassy in New Delhi in November last year after the announcement of the closure of the mission run by then Ambassador Farid Mamdze.
Wardak was appointed before the Taliban took control of Afghanistan in 2021 and was reportedly the only female Afghan diplomat.
